First death penalty given by lay judges

A 32-year-old man on trial at the Yokohama District Court became Nov. 16 the first defendant sentenced to death under the lay judge system, convicted of brutally murdering two men last year.

The court said it had no choice but to hand down the death penalty, noting that although Hiroyuki Ikeda had confessed to the killings, his admission carried little weight.

But after reading out the sentence, presiding Judge Yoshifumi Asayama urged Ikeda to file an appeal, saying, "This is a conclusion of consequence, so as a court, we recommend that you file an appeal." Ikeda was charged with conspiring with another man to kill two men in Funabashi, Chiba Prefecture, in June 2009 before dismembering and dumping their corpses.

Nobel Prise

Robert Edwards of Britain won the 2010 Nobel Prize in medicine Oct. 4 for developing in vitro fertilization, a controversial breakthrough that ignited sharp criticism from religious leaders but helped millions of infertile couples in the past three decades have children.

Edwards, an 85-year-old professor emeritus at the University of Cambridge, started working on IVF as early as the 1950's. He developed the technique — in which egg cells are removed from a woman, fertilized outside her body and then implanted into the womb — together with gynecologist surgeon Patrick Steptoe, who died in 1988. On July 25, 1978, Louise Brown in Britain became the first baby born through the procedure, marking a revolution in fertility treatment.

Lawmakers' income hits record low

The average income of lawmakers hit a record low yen22.23 million in 2009, down yen2.6 million from the previous year, according to data released June 30 by the Diet. Cuts in benefits and the lack of major land and stock sales are believed to have caused the fall to a level unseen since both the House of Representatives and House of Councilors started releasing financial statements of lawmakers in 1993.

SEA Shepherd

An antiwhaling activist from New Zealand was convicted and given a suspended prison term July 7 for interfering with a Japanese whaling ship and illegally boarding it in the Antarctic Ocean in February.
The Tokyo District Court gave a two-year prison term, suspended for five years, to former Sea Shepherd member Peter Bethune, 45, for launching a bottle containing butyric acid onto the Shonan Maru No. 2 that injured one of its crew members Feb. 11, and for illegally boarding the vessel Feb. 15.
Bethune was not planning to appeal, according to his counsel. After the ruling, Bethune was taken into custody by immigration authorities. As he had technically illegally entered Japan by boarding the vessel, he is expected to be deported within days, said one of the attorneys, who declined to be named. Prosecutors had demanded a two-year prison term, while the defense team sought a suspended sentence.

MATSUDA

A former temporary worker at Mazda Motor Corp. hit 11 Mazda employees with a car on the morning of June 22, at the automaker's plant in the city of Hiroshima, killing one and injuring the others, police said.
Toshiaki Hikiji, 42, of Hiroshima, was driving a Mazda Familia at around 7:35 a.m. as workers were beginning to arrive at the Ujina plant.
He fled the scene after hitting the workers but called the police, who found him on a mountain in the nearby town of Fuchu and arrested him.
Of the 11 workers, all of whom were male, Hiroshi Hamada, 39, died and two others were seriously hurt. The other eight sustained minor injuries.
The police found that Hikiji went bankrupt two years ago.
They suspect Hikiji attempted random mayhem using a car and a knife like Tomohiro Kato, who is on trial over the Akihabara rampage.

The Japanese are aiming to reach the quarter-finals for the first time.
And Oakda said: "Japan's aim of becoming one of the world-class teams would be one step closer if we can qualify for the last eight.
"The World Cup is a very good measurement to estimate the level of a nation at this time and we've come so far. For the football community of Japan, it would be very encouraging if we advanced."But Okada also warned: "The biggest concern is that, while back in Japan the fans are jubilant at how far we've come, the players should not be complacent."

MOBIL PHONE

Children whose mothers lived close to a mobile phone tower while pregnant did not appear to be at any higher risk of cancer than children whose mothers lived farther away, a new study finds. British researchers analyzed 1,397 cancer cases in children up to age 4 from 1999 to 2001 in the United Kingdom. Using a national birth registry, they identified 5,588 similar children without cancer. Next, they compared how far the children's mothers lived from a cell phone tower and the stations' signal strengths. No significant differences were seen between the two groups.

PERFECT GAME

Armando Galarraga of the Detroit Tigers lost his bid for a perfect game June 2 with two outs in the ninth inning on a call that first base umpire Jim Joyce later admitted he blew.
First baseman Miguel Cabrera cleanly fielded Jason Donald's grounder to his right and made an accurate throw to Galarraga covering the bag. The ball was there in time, and all of Comerica Park was ready to celebrate the 3-0 win over Cleveland, until Joyce emphatically signaled safe.
The veteran ump regretted it.
"It was the biggest call of my career, and I kicked the (stuff) out of it," Joyce said, looking and sounding distraught as he paced in the umpires' locker room. "I just cost that kid a perfect game."
Detroit general manager Dave Dombrowski said Joyce asked to speak with Galarraga. Denied the first perfect game in Tigers history, Galarraga appreciated the gesture.
